巴哈是一位多產的作曲家。他的作品包括有將近300首的大合唱曲；組成《平均律鋼琴曲集》的一套48首賦格曲和前奏曲；至少還有140首其它前奏 曲；100多首其它大鍵琴樂曲；23首小協奏曲；4首序曲；33首奏鳴曲；5首彌撒曲；3首聖樂曲及許多其它樂曲。總計起來，巴哈譜寫出800多首嚴肅樂曲。
巴哈篤信宗教，是個路德教徒。他希望他的樂曲為教會服務，他的大多數作品都是宗教音樂。在音樂形式上他無意創新，而是把現有的形式推上頂峰。

巴哈二十一歲時同他的叔伯二妹結為伉儷，他們一共生了七個孩子，但是當巴哈三十五歲時妻子不幸夭折。翌年他鸞鳳再續，可是他的第二個妻子非但不能幫助撫養 頭七個孩子，反而又給他生了十三個。巴哈死後只留下九個兒女，其中有四個成為真正著名的音樂家。這的確是一個音樂天才之家！
巴哈是一位多產的作曲家。他的作品包括有將近300首的大合唱曲；組成《平均律鋼琴曲集》的一套48首賦格曲和前奏曲；至少還有140首其它前奏 曲；100多首其它大鍵琴樂曲；23首小協奏曲；4首序曲；33首奏鳴曲；5首彌撒曲；3首聖樂曲及許多其它樂曲。總計起來，巴哈譜寫出800多首嚴肅樂曲。
巴哈篤信宗教，是個路德教徒。他希望他的樂曲為教會服務，他的大多數作品都是宗教音樂。在音樂形式上他無意創新，而是把現有的形式推上頂峰。
在約翰·薩巴斯坦·巴哈去世後的半個世紀裡，他的音樂大體上無人問津（但是值得注意的是那個時代的最偉大的音樂家──海頓，莫札特和貝多芬極為欣賞巴哈的天賦）。新的音樂風格在發展，巴哈的「舊式」樂曲一時聲消音滅。但是1800年以後，人們對巴哈樂曲重新發生了濃厚的興趣，從那時起，他的聲譽和名望與日俱增。在今天這個非宗教的時代裡，巴哈遠比他在世期間的名望更高。一位元兩百年前在風格和主題方面都被認為是舊式的作曲家，今天卻受到了廣泛的頌揚。

巴哈無伴奏小提琴奏鳴曲與組曲一共6首，BWVl001—1006，大約於1720年作於德國的克滕。
這6首奏鳴曲與組曲，巴哈設計了小提琴表達所能演奏的一切和絃，使用了幾乎不可能演奏的對位技巧。它們構成了巴哈小提琴音樂的顛峰。在巴哈之後，小提琴無伴奏奏鳴曲很少有人再創作，是因為再也無法逾越這座顛峰。
巴哈無伴奏弦樂作品包括三首小提琴奏鳴曲，三首組曲(Partita)和六首無伴奏大提琴組曲(suite),都是他任職科登時所作，在同時期他也創作了許多器樂曲，這跟那時環境有關，因為當時並沒有合唱團供他使用，他也不必創作宗教性質音樂。
這些作品的創作順序並沒有歷史文獻可以考證，如果單純以推論方式來說，似乎無伴奏小提琴在先，這是因為無伴奏小提琴寫作在這之前已有許多先例，而整套無伴奏大提琴作品則以巴哈開先河。就樂曲組成來看，小提琴組曲型式非常不統一，大提琴組曲型式十分一致,似乎是他先在小提琴上熟悉無伴奏弦樂曲寫作後再應用於大提琴。
無伴奏小提琴奏鳴曲及組曲的出版順序是：奏鳴曲第一號，組曲第一號，奏鳴曲第二號組曲第二號，奏鳴曲第三號，組曲第三號如是交錯出版。為何如此呢？三首組曲的形成為不規則，但三首奏鳴曲卻很明顯的為一個統一架構，是自成一套系統的作品。是因為調性安排的關係嗎？這六首確實可以找到調性的關聯，但卻是組曲，奏鳴曲自成系統。因此這樣的出版順序可以推論為：巴哈意欲將這六首統一為一組作品，避免明顯的分為組曲和奏鳴曲兩組，而且如是交錯出版也使這六首的安排不致太單調。
